The education sector of Akwa Ibom State witnessed a total strike this Monday as teachers in public secondary schools embarked on a sympathy strike with their primary schools counterparts who have been on strike since the second term of 2014/2015 began on Monday 12th January.
Our correspondent reports that hundreds of students from the various schools in Uyo were seen initially milling around the schools but later left for home when no teacher was available to attend to them.
Our investigations revealed that the teachers of public secondary schools decided to join their primary school counterparts who had not being paid their salaries from upwards of seven months.
A primary school teacher told The Sensor that the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) and Skye Bank have been hiding under the pretext of data capturing to punish the teachers.
“I have not been paid for over seven months now. The people doing data capturing will publish the names of few teachers for data capturing and after this they will not do it again for months. They will pay the few captured. After sometime again they will take few names
and pay. The delay is deliberate. They don't want to pay us. I have children and my family is suffering as a result of all these punishment we are getting from the government. God will surely judge in this matter” the female teacher said.
The primary school teachers have complained of unpaid leave grant, promotion arrears among others.
The Sensor gathered that teachers of public schools through their various unions are
planning to shut down private schools in the state from next week.
They are of the opinion that government has remained unresponsive because the children of its officials attend private schools in the state or abroad.
