Letter from a Concern Admission Seeker:-

It’s quite exasperating to say the least at the rate in which admission seekers are being disregarded in our Educational system, Much to my dismay.

Despite the fact that the intending cadets go through several rigorous physical fitness exercises and  examination like Jamb, Maritime Screening Examination and purchase expensive admission forms and pay hugely for Medical Fitness test all in an attempt to secure admission in the Academy.

Most of us travel from town to town in an attempt to meet the deadline of the examinations we still get treated as trash, simply because we want to be educated, much to my chagrin.

I am an intending cadet of MAN ORON and I reside in Lagos State. However, I’m in a great dismay and anxiety as I type this because I and my fellow intending cadets are anxious as hell and we are tired of sitting at home doing nothing when we were supposed to be in school getting ready for the academic session.

We implore MAN ORON to please release our admission list and let us be aware of our fate. The examination was conducted on the 5th of  September and it’s past a month now and we haven’t heard anything from neither the school admin nor the admission officer, whereas, conventional  institutions like Unilag, Lasu, Uniben, OAU, and even Unibadan that wrote theirs less than two weeks ago had released their Admission List and students are getting ready for academic session; “why is ours different?”

I plead with Dr. Joshua Okpo to please release our list, So we can know our fate because for sure not everyone will get admitted…so the Unfortunate ones can easily think of what to do next.

Please Dr. Joshua Okpo, This is only a plea to you sir, We beg of you sir.

These are not the best of times for the Federal Ministry of Transport (FMOT) and its various parastatals as
the Ministry is struggling to meet its financial obligations.
The cash-strapped FMOT, after postponing this year’s World Maritime Day celebration three times in two
weeks, was eventually forced to cancel the celebration all together.
The United Nations (UN), via the International Maritime Organization (IMO), created World Maritime Day to
celebrate the international maritime industry’s contribution towards the world’s economy, especially in
shipping. The event’s date varies by year and country but it is always on the last week of September.
The theme for this year’s World Maritime Day was “Maritime education and training”.<br />

The Federal Ministry of Transport, which usually coordinates the World Maritime Day celebration in Nigeria,
had earlier scheduled the event to hold on 24 September but when it could not raise enough funds, it was
forced to shift it to 6 October and then to 16 October (Friday last week). But by Tuesday, the Ministry
was still unable to raise funds for the event, scheduled to hold at the Federal Palace Hotel, Lagos and was
forced to cancel it.

The Director, Public Relations, Federal Ministry of Transport, Mrs. Yetunde Sonaike, in an SMS sent
to SHIPS & PORTS DAILY said, “The World Maritime Day celebration has been postponed for now.”
However, unofficial sources said the event may no longer hold this year.
It is the first time that Nigeria would miss out of the World Maritime Day Celebration.<br />

A staff at the Ministry said the implementation of the Treasury Single Account (TSA), which commenced on
September 15, is responsible for the lack of funds in the Ministry and its agencies.
“The Ministry usually raises fund for such event from the parastatals including Nigerian Ports Authority
(NPA), Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC)
and National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) but the TSA implementation has mopped up all our funds
hence the inability to raise money this time,” a staff at NIMASA told SHIPS & PORTS DAILY.
The situation is so bad at the maritime agencies such that the September salaries of NPA staff were not
paid until last week.
“This has never happened before since I joined NPA.<br />

 Our salary has never been delayed before. This is the
first time ever,” an NPA staff told SHIPS & PORTS DAILY.
The workers who spoke with our correspondent did so under the condition of anonymity as they were not
authorised by their organisations to do so.

grounded the activities of the various maritime agencies with some top management staff and stakeholders
calling for their exemption from its implementation.<br />

The management of Maritime Academy of Nigeria (MAN), Oron, Akwa Ibom, has appealed to the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) to improve the funding of the academy.<br />
<br />
The Rector of the Academy, Mr Joshua Okpo, who made the appeal in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Oron on Sunday noted that the financial needs of the institution had risen above the amount the law mandated NIMASA to release to it.<br />

He told NAN that the institution needed to build a simulator complex valued at N2.5 billion so as to meet the training requirements of its cadets.<br />

The rector explained that the establishment of the simulator complex would require the provision of Global Maritime Distress Signal System (GMDSS), radar ARPA simulator and engine simulator.<br />

Okpo said that the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) audit team would visit the academy in January 2016 for the assessment of its facilities.<br />

 </center>“We must try very hard to remain on the IMO white list and we appeal to the Federal Government to help in purchasing the equipment.<br />

The rector said with the installation of the simulators, students of the academy would no longer be taken to Regional Maritime University, Ghana, for further training and certification.<br />
Okpo who was recently re-appointed for a second term in office, promised to work hard to complete all ongoing projects in the academy to enable it to attain a degree-awarding status.<br />

Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, yesterday, grilled<br />
former Governor Godswill Akpabio for over seven hours, and confronted him with<br />
evidence of alleged financial impropriety while he held sway in Akwa Ibom State.<br />
The interrogation of Akpabio by the agency, it was learnt, made it possible for him to come face-to- face with what was described as major financial transactions, on the second day with operatives, carried out by his administration, consequent upon which he was asked to provide explanation..<br />

The transactions, estimated at N108 billion, according to EFCC sources, were,<br />
however, said to have been stoutly defended by Akpabio, who claimed he had the<br />
power as governor to authorize such monumental expenditure “in the interest of<br />

The anti-graft agency, acting on petitions filed against Akpabio and his<br />
administration, had, on Friday, summoned the former governor and grilled him.<br />
Sources claimed that evidence extracted from the accounts staff in Uyo<br />
Government House as well as ministries, agencies and departments was used to<br />
confront the Senate Minority Leader yesterday.<br />

One of the sources told Sunday Vanguard that the former governor was still being grilled by the EFCC operatives as at 6pm after he arrived the headquarters around<br />

“The former governor is still with our operatives, who are taking him up on a<br />
number of financial transactions that required clarifications from him and his<br />
officials”, the source added.<br />
“We really need to know how and why certain transactions were carried out and if<br />
such huge withdrawals in certain cases, based on evidence before us, complied<br />
with laid down financial regulations or the said amount of money was wrongly<br />
spent.”<br />

But the former governor denied any wrongdoing, while claiming that the<br />
allegations were tissues of lies.<br />

Akpabio, who spoke through Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Information, Mr.<br />
Aniekan Umanah, said those accusing him of impropriety did not know the<br />
workings of government.<br />
Umanah said:”Every sum withdrawn from a government account is tied to a<br />
subhead and there must be a budgetary provision. To attribute fraud to<br />
withdrawals, which had the full sanction of government and was accommodated in the budget, is strange, mischievous and untenable. More so, when one understands that there are checks and balances which guide all aspects of government financial administration.”<br />

He said the allegation that the state government spent N50 billion on the March<br />
general elections falls flat based on his explanation of the workings of government on financial transactions.“There was no such provision in the budget of this year and such an amount could not have been paid as an extra-budgetary expenditure and yet salaries and other commitments were met. We challenge the petitioners to provide proof to support this wild allegation. Who was it paid to? How was it paid? Where was it paid? And when was it paid,”the commissioner said.<br />
“Senator Akpabio does not own a 25-storey building in Victoria Island or in any<br />
part of the world, as alleged by the petitioner. It is also patent falsehood that the<br />
house at 22 Probyn Road, Ikoyi belongs to Senator Akpabio.<br />
“It is a rented building which ownership can be verified from the Lagos State<br />
Lands Registry.<br />
“Senator Akpabio does not own the properties mentioned in the petition to belong<br />
to him. You can verify the ownership of the properties (5 Okokosi Close, Maitama<br />
and Plot 28 Colorado Close, Maitama) from the land registry in Abuja,” he said.<br />
He also denied that the state received over N2 trillion as oil allocation.<br />
“Please do note that the idea that the Akwa Ibom State government received over<br />
N2.5 trillion in the eight years of the Akpabio administration is an outrageous lie.<br />
“What this suggests is that the state government received an average of N26 billion monthly for the period. What a lie! From published accounts of disbursement from the Federation Account, Akwa Ibom State never received up to N26 billion in any month throughout the period.<br />

From investigations by Premium Times, Senetor Akpabio at about 5.20 pm on Friday had been spotted leaving with EFCC operatives as he was accompanied a few aides and a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, SAN, Ricky Tarfa.<br />

“He was brought in at about 5.20 pm accompanied by a few aides and Mr. Rickey Tarfa,” the source said. “It is not yet known whether he will be allowed to go this night. It depends on how the interrogation goes.”<br />

The spokesperson for the EFCC, Wilson Uwujaren, did not answer or return calls seeking comment for this story. The EFCC had begun investigation into alleged theft of<br />
N108.1billion of Akwa Ibom funds by the former governor in June.<br />

The action followed a petition forwarded to the commission by an Abuja-based lawyer and activist, Leo Ekpenyong. Mr. Ekpenyong had on June 8 petitioned President Muhammadu Buhari and the EFCC, calling for Mr. Akpabio’s probe and accusing him of looting Akwa Ibom state treasury.<br />

Akwa Ibom and Rivers States are Nigeria’s largest oil-producing states. The two states alternate as first and second top producers periodically.<br />

The two states receive the highest funds allocation from the Federation Accounts Allocation Committee, FAAC, monthly.<br />
<br />
Data from the National Bureau of Statistics and the office of the Accountant General of the Federation indicate that under Mr. Akpabio, known for ostentatious spending, Akwa Ibom received a staggering N1. 6 trillion from FAAC between June 2007 and May 2014.<br />

At the time he vacated office on May 29, the state received more, excluding other revenues like Ecological Funds, internally generated revenue etc.<br />
<br />
In a new petition to the EFCC dated June 22, and copied to Mr. Buhari and the Inspector General of Police, Solomon Arase, Mr. Ekpenyong gave details of some of Mr. Akpabio’s alleged financial recklessness.<br />

He alleged that between January and December 2014, the ex- governor colluded with two of his top aides to steal a whopping N108.1 billion from the state’s treasury.<br />
<br />
Mr. Ekpenyong told the EFCC that the former Government House Permanent Secretary, Etekamba Umoren, and the former Accountant General of the state, Udo Isobara, colluded with Mr. Akpabio to steal the funds.<br />
“Between January –December 2014, it is on record that the trio of Godswill Akpabio, Mr. Etekamba Umoren and Mr. Udo Isobara, made illegal but substantial withdrawals of cash from a designated state government-owned account with Zenith Bank with account number: 1010375881 amounting to N22.1 billion,”<br />

he stated in the petition.<br />
“It is worthy of note that reasons for such ungodly cash withdrawals against financial regulations and due process laws range between sundry use and unjustifiable expenditures by Godswill Akpabio and his numerous surrogates and proxies. “For example, a whopping N18 billion was withdrawn fraudulently from the state FAAC account with the United Bank<br />
for Africa in trenches of N10 million and above by Mr. Isobara in a surreptitious manner to conceal their dishonest intention.”<br />
<br />
For assisting Mr. Akpabio retire billions of the stolen funds, Mr. Ekpenyong said Mr.Umoren was rewarded with an appointment as Government House chief of staff and now secretary to the state government under Udom Emmanuel’s administration.<br />
<br />
The legal practitioner went on to state that over N50 billion of Akwa Ibom funds were spent by the former governor during thelast general elections. During the period under review, he said Mr. Akpabio also withdrew a whopping N18 billion from the state coffers under<br />
the guise of special services, reception of very important guests and sundry items.<br />
<br />
“The cumulative aggregate of these monies stolen by Godswill Akpabio from the coffers of government as pocket money is the annual budget of some states in Nigeria put together,” the petition reads.<br />
<br />
He listed the bouquet of assets acquired by the former governor through surrogates to include a multi-billion naira mansion at Plot 5 Okogosi Spring Close, off Katsina-Ala Crescent, Maitama-Abuja, a multi-billion naira mansionette at Plot 28 Colorado Close, Maitama, Abuja and another multi-billion naira mansion at 22 Probyn Road, Ikoyi, Lagos.<br />

Others include a multi-billion naira mansionette at Plot 23 Olusegun Aina Street, Parkview, Lagos and a multi- billion naira 25 storey building at Akin Adesola Street, Victoria Island, Lagos.<br />
“As earlier promised, more details of assets and graft-related funds illegally and fraudulently siphoned from Akwa Ibom State treasury and laundered to foreign destinations are in the offing.<br />

But the commissioner of information during the administration of Mr. Akpabio, Aniekan Umana, described the contents of the petition by Mr. Ekpenyong as falsehood taken too far.<br />
He said the petition betrayed a lack of understanding of the workings of government.<br />

“Every sum withdrawn from a government account is tied to a subhead and there must be a budgetary provision. To attribute fraud to withdrawals which had the full sanction of Government and was accommodated in the budget is strange, mischievous and untenable.<br />
<br />
More so, when one understands that there are checks and balances which guide all aspects of government financial administration,” he said. He also said the allegation that the State Government spent N50 billion on the March General Elections falls flat on its face<br />
based on his explanations of the workings of government as regards financial transactions.<br />

“There was no such provision in the budget of this year and such an amount could not have been paid as an extra-budgetary expenditure and yet salaries and other commitments<br />
were met. We challenge the petitioners to provide proof to support this wild allegation. Who was it paid to? How was it paid? Where was it paid? And when was it paid?<br />
<br />
“Senator Akpabio does not own a 25-storey building in Victoria Island or in any part of the world, as alleged by the petitioner. It is also a patent falsehood that the house at 22 Probyn Road, Ikoyi belongs to Senator Akpabio. It is a rented building which ownership can be verified from Lagos State Lands Registry.<br />

“Senator Akpabio does not own the properties mentioned in the petition to belong to him.<br />
You can verify the ownership of the properties (5 Okokosi Close, Maitama and Plot 28 Colorado Close, Maitama) from the land registry in Abuja,” he said. He also denied the state received over N2 trillion as oil allocation.<br />

with the label.</p>
<p dir="ltr">According to TMZ, Lil Wayne filed a lawsuit asking a judge to end<br>
his contract with Cash Money. According to the lawsuit, Wayne<br>
says Birdman and company violated the deal by withholding tens<br>
of millions of dollars Cash Money owes him for his long-delayed<br>
album, "Tha Carter V."</p>

Wayne claims because Cash Money is refusing to pay, he's. entitled to walk. But Lil Wayne wants more than just a declaration of freedom. Sources connected to Wayne tell TMZ ... if Birdman antes up then he can release "Tha Carter V," but only if Wayne gets paid. There are 2 payments that have irked Wayne -- he says he was owed $8 million when he went into the studio to record "Tha Carter V " in December 2013, and another $2 mil when he completed the album last month.</p>
<p dir="ltr">We're told the hope is that Universal -- which distributes Cash<br>
Money records -- will step in and earmark the $10 mil for Wayne. And we're told Universal is already putting pressure on Cash Money to settle.<br>
If Cash Money pays Wayne the $10 mil, it would essentially<br>
eliminate any breach of contract. That means Wayne would have no legal basis to ask out of the contract. Even though Wayne's suing for $51 million, most of that is predicated on future lost profits which would not be an issue if they settle.<br>
As for the release of "Tha Carter V" ... even if the case settles the power would be in Birdman's claws.</p>

CERTIFICATE SAGA: BUHARI SINKS DEEPER WITH LIES!<br />
Yesterday, General Muhammadu Buhari made a shocking and belated disclosure that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has his documents.  He has not been specific about the documents he is referring to but it is very clear that this is yet another squalid attempt to give the Nigerian people the<br />
impression that INEC has his certificate. If this is true, it represents a somersault from his original position which was that INEC has his affidavit and it once again reveals General Buhari for what he is. With this latest antic, General Buhari is obviously trying to smuggle a newly acquired certificate into INEC<br />
through the backdoor. If this is true and if INEC allows such a thing to happen, it would put a serious<br />
question mark on its impartiality and credibility. It would mean that it has collected his newly acquired<br />
certificate, 40 days outside the stipulation of the Law.<br />
We say this because Section 31(3) of the Electoral Act says INEC “shall within 7 days of the receipt of the<br />
receipt of the personal particulars of the candidate, publish same in the constituency...”<br />
Buhari’s words are as follows: “Well, I am not surprised. This is Nigeria. If people are “serious” about this<br />
issue, they ought to have listened to the LEGAL ADVISER of INEC” (Is Buhari saying Nigerians are unserious<br />
by seeking to know the truth?)<br />
Continuing, he says: “This is the first time, INEC by law has got those documents and they said they have<br />
got them.  So anybody who has different view should go to court. So let them remain there.”<br />
Those were the words of General Muhammadu Buhari (NOT MOHAMMED BUHARI), the APC presidential<br />
candidate.<br />
It appears as if the more our alleged “Mr. Incorruptible” attempts to wash himself clean, the more he digs<br />
deeper in the pit of falsehood and perjury.<br />
Now, below are facts already in the public domain, which are incontrovertible:<br />
1. That Muhammadu Buhari (Not Mohammed Buhari) neither submitted nor attached any personal document to form CF001 he filled to INEC.</div>
<div dir="ltr">
2. That the INEC form part C specifically stated that PERSONAL (i.e. Certificate) documents should be attached but Buhari did not attach any as of 18th December, 2014, the last day according to INEC guidelines for submission of form CF001.</div>
<div dir="ltr">
3. That Buhari was the only candidate whose documents were not published like other presidential candidates as stipulated by law, having not attached any certificate previously.</div>
<div dir="ltr">
4. That INEC had acknowledged that fact after publication of particulars of all candidates last year and had not controverted these facts, having itself published the documents attached by all other candidates except Buhari who did not submit any document apart from INEC's own CF001 form and an affidavit, a court<br />
document all of which do not represent PERSONAL DOCUMENT of Buhari.</div>

5.That as at 12 midnight on 30th December, 2014, the expiration of time provided by law for the substitution of candidates, APC did not avail itself that opportunity of substituting the unqualified Buhari for a duly qualified presidential candidate.</div>
<div dir="ltr">
6. That Buhari's only response in his affidavit form in the public domain and displayed by INEC in the 774 LGAs that form the single constituency for presidential contestants was to the effect that "All my academic qualifications and certificates are currently with the secretary of the military Board as at the time of this<br />
affidavit dated 24/11/2014." This affidavit, a very arrogant and whimsical response that his credentials were with the Military Authorities, is in the public domain. If Buhari’s assertion is true, the question is, what is INEC now up to collecting new documents from him through the backdoor, 40 days after the requirement<br />
of law?</div>
<div dir="ltr">
7. That the military authorities came in the open to clarify that the only document in respect of Buhari's WASC was an anticipatory letter by his principal that "Buhari would pass" - NOT THAT BUHARI PASSED.</div>
<div dir="ltr">
8. That Buhari's imperial response at a later press conference was that his alma mater, Government College Katsina, would publish his result when available. How come he now says that INEC has collected his document and why should INEC do so after the statutory time limit?</div>
<div dir="ltr">
9. That what Government College Katsina published was at best a hand-written result of one MOHAMMED BUHARI and not MUHAMMADU BUHARI or at worse a complete forgery.<br />
Fellow Nigerians, Why should General Muhammadu Buhari refer Nigerians to hear from one legal adviser in<br />
INEC?  The same INEC that its Director of legal services, one (Mr. Ibrahim Bawa) who, earlier in response to<br />
numerous inquiries shortly after on December i8, 2014, told the press that INEC had published all that<br />
presidential candidates submitted which in the case of Buhari are just FORM CF001 (no certificate<br />
attached) and affidavit which is court papers and not personal document.<br />
It will be interesting to know at which point the affidavit transmuted into additional documents or when<br />
additional documents were provided to INEC in line with law as noted above.<br />
What Nigerians Should Note<br />
By Buhari's latest statement, we want to alert Nigerians to the following questions which the INEC Chair,<br />
Attahiru Jega, the so-called legal adviser whom a consultant, duly contracted by INEC, had recommended<br />
for redeployment and the APC, must HONESTLY answer:<br />
A. WHEN DID INEC AND THIS LEGAL ADVISER RECEIVE THE DOCUMENTS GIVEN THAT THERE WAS<br />
NOTHING ON RECORD FOR HIM AFTER 18TH DECEMBER 2014?<br />

The Electoral Body must come clean on this matter; otherwise we will be compelled to pass a no-<br />
confidence vote in it. If INEC is complicit in the desperate and despicable attempt to extricate General<br />
Buhari, without compliance with the provisions of the law, from this lingering embarrassment, we will have<br />
no other choice than to harbor the suspicion and fear that the Electoral Body is already compromised and<br />
can lend itself to the ungodly agenda of truncating our victory when our candidate wins.<br />
We also want the election observers to keep watch of the unfolding events regarding General Buhari’s<br />
qualification or otherwise. In other countries, it is about obeying the rule of law and not about protecting the<br />
political interest of an individual, especially since a free, fair and credible election is not about the day of<br />
voting alone but also the processes leading up to it.<br />

"I Will Not Run Govt Of Intimidation" Says Jonathan

<p dir="ltr">President Goodluck Jonathan on Monday promised that he would<br>
not run a government of intimidation if re-elected for second term<br>
in the February 14 presidential election.</p>
<p dir="ltr">He said he would run a government that would allow Nigerians to<br>
express their minds without any fear of intimidation.<br>
Jonathan made the promise during the Peoples Democratic Party<br>
presidential rally held at the Metropolitan Square, Ilorin, Kwara<br>
State.</p>
<p dir="ltr">He said he would not preside over an administration under which<br>
Nigerians would be thinking they are in a zoo where small animals<br>
would be afraid of the big ones.</p>
<p dir="ltr">He said, “My message to you is that we will work with you to<br>
ensure that Nigerians are free.<br>
“We will ensure that you are not governed by intimidation.<br>
“You must be able to express yourself without fear of intimidation.<br>
That is why I signed the Freedom of Information Act.<br>
“We will not allow a situation where Nigerians will think they are in<br>
a zoo where small animals are afraid of the big ones.”</p>
<p dir="ltr">He said his administration was forming a government of young<br>
minds because of its conviction that Nigeria belongs to the youth.<br>
He said since the inception of his administration, he had shown<br>
commitment to reposition the country.<br>
He said his administration had done so much that he would not<br>
disappoint Nigerians.<br>
He mentioned some of the areas his administration had made giant leaps to include railway, health care, agriculture and the economy.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Jonathan recalled that the nation’s economy had grown under his<br>
watch to become the largest in Africa. This, he said, was not achieved by chance.</p>
<p dir="ltr">He said the feat was achieved by the commitment of the economic team that is working day and night.</p>
<p dir="ltr">The President said world bodies such as the International Monetary Fund, World Bank, the Cable News Network and others<br>
had spoken in support of the visible growth in the nation’s<br>
economy.</p>
<p dir="ltr">He wondered if Nigerians who criticise his government’s economic policies are more brilliant than the world bodies.</p>
<p dir="ltr">He warned such people to stop deceiving Nigerians.<br>
Earlier, Vice President Namadi Sambo had said that the present<br>
administration had transformed the nation’s economy to become<br>
the best in Africa.</p>
<p dir="ltr">He said the administration transformed the power sector to a stage that the nation now generates over 4,000MW contrary to the<br>
about 2,000MW at inception.</p>

INEC Disqualifies Seven States Governorship Candidates

<p dir="ltr">The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has rejected the submission of governorship candidates by seven parties in various states of the federation.</p>
<p dir="ltr">The parties and the states affected are: Peoples Party of Nigeria (PPN) in Delta; Labour Party in Niger; New Nigeria Peoples Party in Ogun; Unity Party of Nigeria in Oyo; United Democratic Party in Rivers; and Peoples Democratic Movement in Sokoto and Zamfara States respectively.</p>
<p dir="ltr">In a Decision Extract issued and signed by the Director<br>
(Commission’s Secretariat), Ishiaku A. Gali, the Commission also approved that the House of Representatives election in Ado Opoku/Ogbadibo Federal Constituency of Benue State being uncontested, the Returning Officer should declare the <u>nominated</u><br>
candidate elected on the day of the election.Section 187 of the Electoral Act 2010 (as amended) provides that a candidate to the office of a Governor shall not be deemed to be validly nominated for such office unless he appoints another candidate as his running mate who shall occupy the office of Deputy Governor. Similarly, Section 41 (1) of the amended Act provides:<br>
“If after expiration of time for delivering of nomination papers, withdrawal of candidates and the extension of time as provided for in this Act there is only one person whose name is validly nominated in respect of an election, other than to the office of the President or Governor, that person shall be declared elected.”</p>

<p dir="ltr">The naira, on Friday, depreciated against the dollar as it traded at<br>
N208 from the N191.50 it sold for on Monday, January 19. (it's<br>
about N215 as of today)<br>
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the new rate had<br>
made the naira to lose N16.50 within five days. The CBN’s website, however, put the naira against the dollar at N167.50,<br>
while the pound sold for N253.20 and the euro stood at N193.89.<br>
he development has resulted into speculation in the market and<br>
caused ripple effects on other currencies. NAN correspondent who visited some bureau de change and black market operators in Lagos said that they could not give rates to the pound sterling and the euro. Dealers who preferred anonymity said that there was scarcity of dollars in circulation. They said that the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) had stopped selling forex to the bureaux de change since last year.<br>
The dealers added that the recent review of trading positions for<br>
the forex trading to 72 hours also contributed to speculation in the<br>
system. The effect, they added, was that the naira <u>could</u> depreciate further by next week. NAN recalled that the CBN in November 2014 devalued the naira</p>

Restive youths in Bauchi state this morning attacked PDP campaign delegates, including the Minister of theFCT Senator Bala Mohammed, with stones, slippers, hammers, sachet water and other objects at thebparty's presidential campaign rally which held at the Ibrahim Babangida square in Bauchi the state capital.</div>

According to reports, the youths arrived the venue of the rally singing their support for GEJ but immediately he and his entourage arrived, they started stoning and attacking members of the party.</div>

They destroyed canopies and began chanting songs in support of Gen Buhari. The Police detached to the stadium found it hard to disperse them as they were large in number. FCT Minister, Senator Bala Mohammed, was stoned with sachet water while making his speech at the event.<br />The Minister in the course of his speech pleaded with President Jonathan and other party members not to take the embarrassment seriously as it was part of politics, stating that attack by the youths was the works of the opposition. Others at the podium had to dodge so as not to get hit with the different items thrown.<br />When the Minister shouted “Nigeria”, the crowd shouted back “sai Buhari”, “sai Baba Buhari”, others chanted “Bama yi,” “Bama yi”, meaning we don’t support PDP.</div>

King Abdullah Of Saudi Arabia Dies At 90

<p dir="ltr">Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz has passed away, aged 90. The monarch died late last night January 22nd (Nigerian time) in his home. His death was announced in a statement broadcast on Saudi state TV.<br>
"His Highness Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and all members of the family and the nation mourn the<br>
Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz, who passed away at exactly 1am this morning (Friday - Saudi time)," the statement said.<br>
Abdullah became king in 2005 after the death of his half-brother King Fahd. The late king's brother, Salman, 79, has been announced as the new ruler of the kingdom.</p>
