Nigerian Navy has claimed July 22 they have arrested 20 suspected drug dealers in Nsugbe near Onitsha, Anambra State.
Punch reports with reference to the Commanding Officer of Navy Outpost, Onitsha, Navy Capt. Mike Oamen, who briefed journalists in Onitsha, that the detained people were allegedly selling and smuggling drugs in the community.
Following the raid carried out on a tip-off, the official described the general tactics of fighting criminality in the area:
"So what we have done is to make sure that we begin to deal with the root causes of criminality. So after exhaustive discussion especially at the Security Council meeting, we decided that we begin to look at how to reduce the availability of illegal drugs in Onitsha and Obosi. We try to work on getting credible intelligence so that we swoop on them."
According to Oamen, such tactics has started given positive results, as the crime rates were said to have reduced.
The arrested suspects were handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further investigation and prosecution.
Oamen also commended the governor for rendering all kind of support to the agency and assured him to continue fight criminality in Onitsha and the surroundings, adding:
"Very soon, those shops, kiosks, shanties and even parlours and hotels where hard drugs are sold will have to be shut and their operators will look for better things to do with their lives."
It would be recalled that in the beginning of the month NDLEA official in Anambra ordered the active stop-and-search raids on drug peddlers, saying that fighting drug-related challenges is the beginning of fighting crime in general.
