Nigeria football fraternity has been thrown into another round of mourning following the news of the mysterious death of former Super Eagles and Enyimba defender Romanus Orjinta .
A close source told Sporting Life on phone from Enugu that the hard tackling defender who was nicknamed igwe aga aga in his playing days to underline his rock solid defensive style was found dead at his home in Enugu on New Year ’ s eve by neighbours who observed that he was unusually absent .
At the time of his death, the late footballer was said to have been alone in his apartment as his children were understood to have gone on holiday for the Yuletide season .
“ It ’ s really a tragic story for Orjinta” the source began in a telephone interview with Sporting Life yesterday .
“ First, it was his wife that died five years ago leaving him depressed and despondent . His children have now been orphaned and only God knows how they will cope without their mother and father, ” he lamented .
The Enugu born defender burst into limelight when he marshalled the central defense with Obinna Nwaneri to help Enyimba win the CAF Champions League in 2003.
He also played for Wikki Tourists of Bauchi, the defunct Julius Berger FC of Lagos and Rangers international of Enugu , his home town club . The defender had a brief stint with Lillestrom of Norway were he played for one season before coming back home to retire at Rangers .
Since hanging his boots a few years ago, he lived a relatively quiet life in Enugu where he coached an academy side before his untimely death. The high point of his international career was in 2004 where he won the bronze medal with the Super Eagles at the Nations Cup finals in Tunisia .
